A species of the desmid Closterium shown with one cell in early stage of division.
Division is shown here almost complete
With each successive division girdle bands are formed in some species, Closterium striolatum for example, caused by stretching of the walls. These can be seen as a series of rings near the median region of the cell. I must aplogise for the quality of the images I reduced them to put on the www.
